- 1 long French bread loaf (14–16 inches), split lengthwise
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella, plus extra for broiling
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan or Pecorino Romano
- 1 1/2 cups marinara or pizza sauce
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced (cremini or shiitake)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus 1 tablespoon butter
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil or a handful of fresh basil leaves, torn
- Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: pepperoni, crumbled sausage, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, sliced olives, or fresh arugula
Instructions
- Heat olive oil and butter over medium-high heat in a skillet. Add mushrooms and sauté for 6–8 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Slice the French loaf lengthwise. Brush with olive oil or garlic butter and season with salt and pepper.
- Spread sauce over each half, sprinkle with Parmesan, add sautéed mushrooms and other toppings, then mound with mozzarella.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes until cheese melts and edges turn golden. Broil for 1–2 minutes for a charred finish.
- Let rest for a few minutes, then slice and serve.
Notes
Experiment with different toppings and sauces for a personalized taste. Par-bake the bread if using saucier toppings to prevent sogginess.
