- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Food coloring (orange and black)
Instructions
- Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3-4 minutes).
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix into the butter mixture until the dough comes together.
- Divide the dough into two portions, adding food coloring to each.
- Roll out each colored dough between parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Layer the colored doughs on top of each other and roll into a log. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Slice the chilled log into rounds (1/4 inch thick) and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Cool before serving.
Notes
Ensure your butter is softened but not melted to achieve the best texture. Chill the dough long enough to prevent spreading during baking.
