- 2 teaspoons chai spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 cup warm milk or dairy alternative
- ½ cup melted butter (or oil for dairy-free)
- 1 cup sourdough starter
Instructions
- Activate your starter by feeding it a few hours beforehand until bubbly.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, chai spices, salt, and sugar.
- In another bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, and sourdough starter until smooth.
- Fold wet ingredients into dry, mixing until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place dough in greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (1-2 hours).
- Punch down the dough, divide, roll into circles, layer with butter, cinnamon, and sugar, cut into wedges, and shape into stars.
- Let stars rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush with milk and butter, then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool on a wire rack before enjoying.
