Description

Succulent slow cooker carnitas with a symphony of flavors that bring families together.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs pork shoulder or butt
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 lime or orange, juiced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut the pork into large chunks (about 2-3 inches). Season with salt, cumin, paprika, and black pepper.
  2. If desired, sear the pork in a skillet for extra flavor, then transfer to slow cooker.
  3. Layer the chopped onion, garlic, and cilantro over the pork. Squeeze lime or orange juice and pour in chicken broth.
  4. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
  5. Remove pork, shred with two forks, and allow to rest.
  6. For crispy edges, spread shredded pork on a baking sheet and broil for a few minutes.
  7. Serve with warm tortillas and toppings.

Notes

For a lighter option, consider using pork loin. For a vegetarian version, try jackfruit instead of pork.
