Description

Delicious salted caramel apple crumble bars featuring a buttery crust, tart apples, and a rich caramel drizzle.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 5 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 12 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (to finish caramel)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13-inch pan.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, and flaky sea salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press two-thirds of the mixture into the bottom of the pan. Bake for 12–15 minutes until pale golden. Cool slightly.
  3. Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread the apple mixture over the crust.
  4. For the caramel, melt granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until amber. Whisk in butter, then add heavy cream slowly. Stir in flaky sea salt and allow to cool slightly.
  5. Drizzle two-thirds of the caramel over the apples and top with the remaining crust mixture. Add extra flakes of sea salt on top.
  6. Bake for 30–40 minutes until golden and the caramel bubbles. Cool completely in the pan before chilling for 2 hours. Drizzle reserved caramel before serving.

Notes

Ensure the apples are firm and sliced evenly. Use a hot knife to cut clean squares.
