Description

A rich chocolate cake adorned with vibrant orange buttercream, this Halloween Spiderweb Cake is perfect for festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups black cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk mixed with vinegar)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • Zest and juice of 1 medium orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together black cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  8. Beat softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, orange zest, and juice.
  9. Once cakes are cool, frost with buttercream and create a spiderweb design with remaining frosting.

Notes

Be gentle when folding dry ingredients to prevent a dense cake. Always measure accurately.
