A foolproof method for cooking rice to perfection, ensuring fluffy and separate grains every time.
Ingredients

- 1 cup long-grain white rice (Jasmine or Basmati)
- 1 1/4 cups water or low-sodium broth
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or neutral oil
- Optional: small bay leaf, clove of smashed garlic, or sprigs of thyme
Instructions
- Rinse the rice in cold water until the rinse water runs mostly clear.
- Measure rice using a 1:1.25 rice-to-liquid ratio.
- Toast rice gently in butter or oil for 1–2 minutes until translucent.
- Add water or broth, salt, and aromatics; bring to a simmer uncovered.
- Reduce heat to the lowest setting, cover tightly, and do not lift the lid.
- Cook undisturbed for 12–18 minutes (35–45 for brown rice).
- Remove from heat, let rest covered for 10 minutes, and fluff gently.
- Serve immediately or keep warm.
Notes
If rice appears undercooked, add a tablespoon of hot water and steam for an additional 3–5 minutes.
