Description

A comforting and easy baked ziti dish filled with Italian sausage, cheese, and rich tomato sauce, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Fresh basil, for garnish
  • Fresh oregano, for garnish
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large oven-safe skillet, lightly sauté chopped onions and minced garlic until fragrant and translucent.
  3. Add in your Italian sausage, breaking it up as it cooks until browned.
  4. Pour in the tomato sauce and let it simmer, mixing in desired herbs.
  5. Stir in the uncooked ziti and add enough water to cover the pasta.
  6. Let the ziti simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Once the ziti is cooked but still al dente, dollop in the ricotta and sprinkle the mozzarella on top.
  8. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese melts and turns golden.
  9. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

Notes

For a lighter option, substitute sausage with grilled chicken or turkey. Gluten-free pasta can also be used.
