Description

A delightful recipe for homemade New York bagels, offering a perfect balance of chewy texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
  • 1¼ cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Optional toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, coarse salt)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add in the bread flour and salt, then mix until it forms a sticky dough.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air, divide it into eight equal pieces, shape them into bagels.
  6. Let the shaped bagels rise for about 30 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and boil the bagels for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  8. Transfer the boiled bagels to the baking sheet, optionally brush with egg wash, and bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Allow the bagels to cool slightly before enjoying.
