Description
A delightful recipe for homemade New York bagels, offering a perfect balance of chewy texture and flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
- 1¼ cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Optional toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, coarse salt)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add in the bread flour and salt, then mix until it forms a sticky dough.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air, divide it into eight equal pieces, shape them into bagels.
- Let the shaped bagels rise for about 30 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and boil the bagels for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
- Transfer the boiled bagels to the baking sheet, optionally brush with egg wash, and bake in a preheated oven at 425°F for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow the bagels to cool slightly before enjoying.
