A comforting, homemade BBQ sauce that balances sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors, perfect for dipping or glazing.

- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small finely minced shallot or 1/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Salt to taste
- Optional: cayenne pepper, liquid smoke
Instructions
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- Add minced shallot or onion and cook until translucent, about 2–3 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in ketchup, honey, and brown sugar; mix until smooth.
- Add apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, onion powder, and black pepper; whisk well.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and reduce heat to low, cooking for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust the flavor by adding more vinegar or sweeteners as desired.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using or refrigerating in an airtight jar.
Notes
Taste as you go and adjust the sweetness and tanginess to your preference. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender.
