Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with yogurt or milk mixed with vinegar)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 3–4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 2–4 tbsp heavy cream (or milk)
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs and sugar until frothy. Add buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract, mixing well.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Spoon the batter into cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- In a bowl, beat the butter for frosting until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in powdered sugar. Add vanilla and cream to achieve desired consistency.
- Once cooled, frost the cupcakes and melt chocolate chips. Drizzle over cupcakes in a circular pattern, using a toothpick to create a web design.
- Top with gummy spiders for extra decoration.
Notes
Use quality chocolate for the spider web to achieve the best finish. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
