Description

Delightful cookies celebrating the Day of the Dead, combining rich flavors of butter, spices, and citrus zest.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Zest of one orange
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Powdered sugar for decorating
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or edible glitter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and orange zest.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients and mix just until combined, avoiding overmixing.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick and use skeleton-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
  8. Place cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool on a wire rack.
  9. Decorate cookies with royal icing or powdered sugar glaze, adding food coloring and sprinkles.
  10. Allow icing to set before serving.

Notes

Baking time may vary; keep an eye on your cookies to avoid overbaking. Use room temperature butter for best results and avoid skipping the chilling step.
