Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Set aside.
- Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and orange zest.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients and mix just until combined, avoiding overmixing.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick and use skeleton-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
- Place cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool on a wire rack.
- Decorate cookies with royal icing or powdered sugar glaze, adding food coloring and sprinkles.
- Allow icing to set before serving.
