A comforting and creamy turnip casserole that becomes a family favorite, perfect for chilly evenings.


Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized turnips, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar or gruyere cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced turnips, sautéed onions and garlic, cream or milk, and half of the cheese. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with the remaining cheese and breadcrumbs.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and the turnips are tender.
  6. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Try soaking the turnips in water for 10 minutes before cooking to ensure even baking. Let the casserole rest after baking to enhance flavors.
