Description
A comforting and creamy turnip casserole that becomes a family favorite, perfect for chilly evenings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-sized turnips, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
- 1 cup sharp cheddar or gruyere cheese, grated
- 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko recommended)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Then stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced turnips, sautéed onions and garlic, cream or milk, and half of the cheese. Season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.
- Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish. Top with the remaining cheese and breadcrumbs.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and the turnips are tender.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
Try soaking the turnips in water for 10 minutes before cooking to ensure even baking. Let the casserole rest after baking to enhance flavors.
