Description
A comforting dish of tender cabbage enveloped in a rich creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings or as a delightful side.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 head of cabbage, finely shredded
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 large onion, sliced thinly
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: A handful of grated cheese (like Parmesan or cheddar), sautéed mushrooms, or herbs like thyme or parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Sauté the onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Prepare the cabbage: Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet, cooking for about 10 minutes until it begins to wilt. Season with salt and pepper.
- Combine the cream: Pour in the heavy cream, stirring to combine. If you like, add your choice of cheese here for that extra layer of flavor.
- Transfer to a baking dish: Pour the cabbage mixture into a greased casserole dish. If you used cheese, sprinkle a bit more on top for a golden finish.
- Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Serve warm, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
For added flavor, consider adding sautéed mushrooms or a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes. Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving for better flavor integration.
