Description
A warm and comforting side dish with a delightful balance of tart cranberries and sweet apples, perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 cups of bread cubes (white or whole grain, preferably stale)
- 2 cups fresh cranberries
- 2 cups chopped apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 teaspoons fresh sage, chopped
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 to 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the bread by cutting into roughly one-inch cubes and allowing to dry out overnight or toast in the oven for 10–15 minutes.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic, sautéing until soft and translucent.
- Stir in chopped apples and cranberries, cooking until just tender, about 4–5 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sautéed mixture with the toasted bread cubes, herbs, salt, and pepper. Pour in enough broth until moistened, stirring gently.
- Transfer the stuffing to a greased baking dish, cover with foil, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes for a crispy top.
- Garnish with fresh parsley before serving warm.
Notes
For a lighter option, use olive oil instead of butter. For a gluten-free version, substitute with gluten-free bread.
