- 4–5 medium-sized fresh yams or sweet potatoes
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Peel the yams and slice them into ½-inch thick rounds.
- In a large bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and water; stir until smooth.
- In a baking dish, layer the yam slices and pour the syrup mixture evenly over them.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-30 minutes, basting occasionally, until tender and syrup thickens.
- Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For a slightly different flavor, consider adding a splash of orange juice or zest. Avoid overcrowding the baking dish for the best texture.
