- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until smooth. Gradually add sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, and mix in vanilla extract until creamy.
- Alternately add the dry mixture and buttermilk to the batter, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Pour the batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
- To make the frosting, beat softened butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and milk until spreadable.
- Once cool, frost the cake layers generously and serve.
Notes
For a flavorful twist, you can substitute buttermilk with a mix of regular milk and a bit of lemon juice or vinegar. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to sour.
