Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until smooth. Gradually add sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, and mix in vanilla extract until creamy.
  5. Alternately add the dry mixture and buttermilk to the batter, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Pour the batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  7. To make the frosting, beat softened butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and milk until spreadable.
  8. Once cool, frost the cake layers generously and serve.

Notes

For a flavorful twist, you can substitute buttermilk with a mix of regular milk and a bit of lemon juice or vinegar. Allow it to sit for a few minutes to sour.
