Description
A delicious family favorite with a buttery, crumbly topping and a spiced apple filling that creates cherished memories.
Ingredients
Scale
- 5 to 6 medium tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats (optional)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- A pinch of ground clove
- 1 store-bought or homemade pie crust
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare the pie crust by rolling it out into a 9-inch pie pan. Refrigerate as you prepare the filling.
- Peel and slice apples into uniform wedges, about 1/4 inch thick. Toss them in a bowl with the lemon juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, the remaining brown sugar, oats, and butter. Use your fingers to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Spoon the apple mixture into the chilled pie crust, distributing evenly.
- Sprinkle the streusel topping generously over the apples, covering the pie completely.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
- Allow it to cool for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a twist, substitute half the apples with pears or swap rolled oats with crushed walnuts. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
