Description

A delicious family favorite with a buttery, crumbly topping and a spiced apple filling that creates cherished memories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 to 6 medium tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • A pinch of ground clove
  • 1 store-bought or homemade pie crust

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the pie crust by rolling it out into a 9-inch pie pan. Refrigerate as you prepare the filling.
  3. Peel and slice apples into uniform wedges, about 1/4 inch thick. Toss them in a bowl with the lemon juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, the remaining brown sugar, oats, and butter. Use your fingers to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Spoon the apple mixture into the chilled pie crust, distributing evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the streusel topping generously over the apples, covering the pie completely.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Allow it to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a twist, substitute half the apples with pears or swap rolled oats with crushed walnuts. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
